He was awaiting extradition to the US for tax-related crimes. McAfee was in a Barcelona jail cell.

Back in October McAfee was arrested at Barcelona’s airport and was held in a jail cell waiting for the outcome.
Above is a tweet by John McAfee on June 16th that states “The US believes I have hidden crypto. I wish I did but it has dissolved through the many hands of Team McAfee,” he tweeted. “My friends evaporated through fear of association. I have nothing. Yet, I regret nothing.”
