Twitter users have recently been criticizing a video shared by Dr. Oz about gun usage and the Second Amendment.
Oz, who is currently running for a U.S. Senate seat in Pennsylvania, released an ad showing him with a rifle, explaining that his father taught him how to handle one and that he is passing along the same lesson to his son.
“My father taught me how to handle my first gun, I’ve taught my son, Oliver, how to do the same,” Oz says in the video.
Oz adds that he has been hunting his whole life and says “when people say I won’t support guns, they’re dead wrong”.
“But our Second Amendment is not just about hunting, it’s about our constitutional right to protect ourselves from intruders or an overly-intrusive government,” he says shortly before the video ends.
“I’m not a Gun Guy but I’ve been around enough Gun Guys to tell that in no way, shape, or form is Dr Oz a Gun Guy,” said one Twitter user.
“I’m a credentialed firearms instructor for shotgun, pistol, rifle, & muzzleloader disciplines. And I’m here to tell you this man doesn’t have a lick of an idea what he’s doing,” tweeted Ezra Thrush, Sr. Director of Gov’t Affairs for Penn Future.
Human Events host Jack Posobiec asked “Why does Oz switch his firing hand in this edited video? Watch between pistol and shotgun and rifle”.
Many have pointed out that Oz’s previous statements on gun control do not match his current ones. He supported “‘red flag’ laws, which would allow the government to confiscate guns from individuals without proof of malicious intent,” reported Fox News in December.
He has also previously promoted a ban on semi-automatic weapons and the “#ThisIsOurLane campaign – a movement of medical professionals seeking greater restrictions on firearm purchases in the United States”.
