New York City Mayor Eric Adams has announced plans to collaborate with former Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director Tom Homan to address the city’s migrant crisis. This decision comes shortly after the Department of Justice (DOJ) dropped federal bribery and corruption charges against Adams.

In a recent interview on “Fox & Friends,” Adams dismissed allegations that the DOJ’s decision was part of a quid pro quo arrangement to secure his cooperation with the Trump administration’s immigration policies, labeling such claims as “silly.” He emphasized that his advocacy for enhanced immigration enforcement in New York City dates back to 2022, predating the charges brought against him.

Adams has proposed revisions to the city’s sanctuary policies, suggesting that local law enforcement should collaborate with ICE in cases involving individuals who have committed crimes. He stated, “What I asked the City Council to do is change the bill that was already in place and modify it… if you are committing a crime, then we should be able to collaborate with ICE — even on civil enforcement if you have committed a crime.”

Tom Homan expressed his commitment to ensuring that Adams follows through on this collaboration, stating, “If he doesn’t come through, I’ll be back in New York City, and we won’t be sitting on the couch – I’ll be in his office, up his butt, saying, ‘Where the hell is the agreement we came to?'”

The DOJ’s decision to drop the charges against Adams has sparked criticism from various quarters. New York Governor Kathy Hochul described the allegations as “extremely concerning and serious,” emphasizing the unprecedented nature of the DOJ’s intervention. Acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Danielle R. Sassoon, resigned after refusing to comply with the DOJ’s directive to dismiss the case against Adams.

This development has intensified debates over the city’s sanctuary policies and the extent of cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities.
