Ghislaine Maxwell Put On Suicide Watch

Ghislaine Maxwell has been put on suicide watch and may seek to delay her Tuesday sentencing, her attorney said Saturday.

“If Ms. Maxwell remains on suicide watch, is prohibited from reviewing legal materials prior to sentencing, becomes sleep-deprived, and is denied sufficient time to meet with and confer with counsel, we will be formally moving on Monday for an adjournment,” said Attorney Bobby Sternheim in a letter to U.S. Circuit Judge Alison Nathan.

Sternheim said her client is unable to “properly prepare” after officials at Metropolitan Detention Center put her in solitary confinement and informed her she was on suicide watch, according to Reuters.

The attorney said Maxwell was given a “suicide smock” and her regular clothes, toothpaste, soap and papers were taken away.

Despite being put on suicide watch, Maxwell “is not suicidal,” according to Sternheim. A psychologist evaluated Maxwell and confirmed the assessment, Reuters reported.

Maxwell was accused of aiding Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse of underage girls.

She was convicted on Dec. 29 on five criminal counts for recruiting and grooming girls for Epstein to abuse between 1994 and 2004.

Epstein killed himself in a Manhattan jail cell in August 2019 awaiting his trial on sex trafficking charges.

Social media users are speculating that, if Maxwell dies in prison, it will be made to look like a suicide.
