Montana, does not have any sanctuary cities, but that didn’t stop the states governor from banning them in a symbolic move.
“We are a nation of laws, and immigration laws will be enforced in Montana,” Governor Greg Gianforte said in a statement after the move was made.
The bill allows for the attorney general to peruse civil action against any county that does not comply with federal immigration law.
This bill comes amid the Biden Administrations leniency at the border, and lack of transparency.
Critics have claimed that the law will create distrust in communities of color, while supporters of the bill assert that the legislation is necessary to prevent complications that arise from sanctuary cities in other states.
Florida’s governor, Ron DeSantis signed legislation outlawing sanctuary cities in 2019 during the Trump administration.
