This year, more minors have been shot in Chicago than have died from COVID-19 in the entire country, according to reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and police.
Across the country, 214 minors have died from the virus this year. Chicago police told Fox 32 Chicago that 261 children have been shot so far and 41 of them have died.
As summer comes to an end, COVID cases in children have been on the rise but deaths in minors only make up 0-0.27% of all COVID deaths in states that report data.
According to the CDC and American Academy of Pediatrics, 7 states have not reported any child deaths from the virus this year.
More children have been fatally shot in Chicago than have died from COVID in Illinois. Since the pandemic began, only 25 people under the age of 18 have died from the virus in the state, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.
63 people, including 8 children, were shot in the city Labor Day weekend. Of those shot, 6 died, including a 4-year-old boy from Alabama.
The young boy, Mychal Moultry, was shot while getting his hair done in an apartment.
Chicago Police Superintendent David O. Brown directed a comment toward criminal offenders saying, “Why are you continuing to be around young people, our children?” He then added, “stay away from children if you want to live that life”.
