Following the Taliban’s takeover, thousands of Afghans have attempted to flee the city of Kabul by clinging to American planes trying to leave the airport.
Crowds of people made their way to Hamid Karzai International Airport after the Taliban seized the city of Kabul on Sunday.
As the U.S. finishes its withdrawal from Afghanistan, more troops were sent to secure the airport and ensure the evacuation of American and allied personnel.
Many Afghans fled to the airport in hopes of evacuating with Americans. On Monday morning, crowds began clinging to boarding ramps and surrounding parked planes.
In an effort to move the crowds, U.S. forces dropped smoke grenades from helicopters and fired into the air.
Evacuation flights leaving Kabul were suspended Monday due to chaos at the airport.
At least five people were found dead, though the cause of death is not determined. Some suspect a stampede may have injured or killed people.
