You’d think that anyone who leaks secret information from the Supreme Court in a partisan effort to compromise the justices would be thrown in jail. The person who leaked the Roe. v Wade draft opinion May face no consequences, however, this may change for future cases.
Their name remains a mystery, but the leaked document marked the first draft opinion to be ever leaked from the court since America’s inception.
The Daily Caller reported, On the heels of an anonymous person leaking a U.S. Supreme Court draft opinion that could overturn the landmark abortion case Roe v. Wade, Senate Republicans have introduced legislation that hands leakers a $10,000 fine and up to 10 years in prison.
Louisianan’s Bill Cassidy is leading the effort to outlaw Supreme Court leaks, and for good reason. Information will be and has been leaked at a specific time to attempt to sway the judges away from publishing the opinion and formalizing the decision.
If the public reacts negatively or if sprees of violence ensue as a result of the opinion, this could make the justices think twice – depending on how dedicated they are to their jobs.
Supreme Court justices serve for life, eliminating the conflict of interest that exists between congressmen and their constituents. Justices do not have to please voters ahead of the next election. Rather SOTUS justices are appointed for life, or until they are unable to fulfill their position.
