“The View” co-host Whoopi Goldberg has been suspended following her comments about the Holocaust.
ABC News president Kim Godwin released a statement Tuesday night, saying “Effective immediately, I am suspending Whoopi Goldberg for two weeks for her wrong and hurtful comments”.
“While Whoopi has apologized, I’ve asked her to take time to reflect and learn about the impact of her comments,” she added.
“The entire ABC News organization stands in solidarity with our Jewish colleagues, friends and communities,” Godwin concluded.
On Monday, Goldberg had argued that the Holocaust “isn’t about race” in a discussion with her colleagues.
Co-host Joy Behar asked “What is it about?” “It’s about man’s inhumanity to man, that’s what it’s about,” Goldberg responded.
Ana Navarro added “But it’s about a White supremacist going after Jews and Gypsies”. “But these are two White groups of people,” Goldberg argued.
Though she apologized for her comments, Goldberg seemed to continue her argument during her appearance on “The Late Show”. “I think of race as being something that I can see,” she said. “You couldn’t tell who was Jewish. They had to delve deeply to figure it out… My point is, they had to do the work”.
In an email to ABC staffers, Godwin praised Goldberg for her apology and her conversation with Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt.
While some believe Goldberg’s apology wasn’t enough and demand she be fired, her co-hosts, Sunny Hostin, Joy Behar, and Ana Navarro, are upset with the suspension.
“I love Whoopi Goldberg. I love ‘The View,'” Navarro told the Daily Beast. “This was an incredibly unfortunate incident. Whoopi is a lifelong ally to the Jewish community. She is not an anti-Semite, period. I am sad. And I have nothing else to say”.
